If there's one thing Sony can look to the games for with Tom Holland's Uncharted, it's that Naughty Dog has been able to build such a compelling roster of characters without ever taking the shopworn "origin route." Their backstories are penciled in through flashbacks and dialogue, which makes for a far more interesting experience. With superhero films at an all-time high, countless origin stories are seen every year. Hollywood has already seen countless origin stories, but what makes Uncharted: Drake's Fortune such a great first game is that it drops players right in the action, and the players come to know the characters through their conversations thereafter. One reason that 2018's Tomb Raiderwas received so poorly was that it was trying to be an origin story, too focused on setting up sequels and not focused on being a contained piece of work.Ĭonsidering Uncharted has many similarities to Tomb Raider an origin story for a globe-trotting fortune seeker based on a video game has been done. These films are often formulaic and more focused on setting up their world and future films, which often makes for lackluster storytelling. An older Nathan Drake allows for these dynamics it's his experience and age that makes them crackle with the wit and chemistry that they do in the games. What makes Uncharted so distinctive - its characters and its relationships - all come from an older Nathan Drake, which a Tom Holland-led film can't replicate. While Nathan did have an earlier relationship with Chloe Frazer (who also appears in the later games), it still wasn't early enough to occur in Tom Holland's era. But they don't meet until the first game, meaning it's not something the film could fit into its timeline. Nathan's relationship with Elena embellishes his humanity they start as co-workers then become friends before reluctantly accepting their love for another - even going on to have a daughter in the fourth game - and it makes for one of the best video game romances. Their romance blossoms over all four games, from a fling to love to marriage to separation to dealing with their action-packed lives getting in the way of their relationship. It also indicates drastic changes to an already troubled script in such a short space of time. With the success of his Spider-Man films, it's understandable that Sony would want to keep Holland headlining their projects, but giving him an entire franchise based on a passing comment seems a tad extreme, especially considering it was a drastic, sudden change from the direction Joe Carnahan's screenplay was heading. Admittedly, Holland has the star-power to make the Uncharted property more widely appealing and an origin story allows an easy entry point for a new franchise, but considering Holland wasn't even very familiar with the games before taking the project, making Uncharted a prequel with a young Nathan Drake based on his comment feels premature and shows little consideration for the source material and its fanbase. As Holland revealed in an interview with Yahoo Movies, the whole thing stemmed from a conversation he had with Sony boss Tim Rothman, saying, " I just had the idea that maybe a young Nathan Drake would be something that audiences would be very interested in." It turns out the idea of doing an origin story for Nathan Drake was Holland's idea.
